Increasing Bacterial Resistance to Ophthalmic Antibiotics

Antibiotics were considered “miracle” drugs when they were introduced in the middle of the 20th century. However, bacterial resistance soon emerged, and today resistance continues to increase at an alarming rate. Organisms such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylococcus epidermidis and vancomycin-resistant S aureus and Enterococci, as well as the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria, have created a serious challenge to the treatment of infectious diseases.
