Dr. Eric Verruto, OD, an Optometrist who specializes in laser refractive surgery consultations and post-operative care, has joined the practice of Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island (OCLI). A resident of Westbury, Dr. Verruto also specializes in post-op refractions, contact lens fittings and primary eye care. Prior to joining OCLI, Dr. Verruto served as the clinical director of a large refractive surgery practice on Long Island. He has participated in multiple volunteer missions to various countries to provide free eye care and eyeglasses to impoverished communities. He is also fluent in Spanish.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Verruto to our team of experienced and dedicated staff of eye care professionals at OCLI,” said Tom Burke, CEO, OCLI. “He will prove to be a great addition to our continuing efforts to meet and exceed our patients’ needs.”

Teamwork, technology are cornerstones for a large practice
Being a large, multispecialty ophthalmology practice means offering patients the best care in every aspect possible. At Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island, Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, FACS, and his colleagues (22 of them, to be exact) are considered to be some of the top specialists in their respective fields — which is exactly what Dr. Donnnfeld and his senior partners David B. Nelson, MD, FACS, and Henry D. Perry, MD, FACS, set out to accomplish when establishing the practice. Read Full Article

Intraoperative aberrometry improves refractive outcomes in eyes with previous LASIK
Intraoperative wavefront aberrometry can help to limit refractive surprises in eyes that have undergone prior refractive surgery by confirming visual outcomes in the operating room, a speaker said.
“Calculating IOL power in eyes that have previously undergone refractive surgery is imprecise and may result in unplanned postoperative refractive errors,” OCULAR SURGERY NEWS Cornea/External Disease Board Member Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, said at Hawaiian Eye 2011. “The intraoperative wavefront aberrometer enables measurement of the true refractive power of the cornea.”
The ORange wavefront aberrometer (WaveTec Vision Systems), which utilizes Talbot Moiré interferometry to provide a refractive range between –15 D and 25 D and a resolution of less than 0.10 D, can provide both aphakic and pseudophakic IOL calculations and guide both limbal relaxing incisions and the placement of toric IOLs, Dr. Donnenfeld said.
In a retrospective study of 29 eyes that had undergone previous LASIK and received cataract surgery and IOL implantation, mean absolute value prediction using the ORange aberrometer was 0.48 D ± 0.35 D , compared to 0.72 D ± 0.59 D using standard methodology, Dr. Donnenfeld said.
Mean absolute value predictions differed by more than 0.5 D in 24 cases, according to Dr. Donnenfeld.
“The intraoperative wavefront aberrometer is capable of a refraction measurement of the aphakic eye through a post-refractive cornea, which is the only way to achieve the true corneal refractive power,” he said. “This is important in post-refractive corneas because the refractive power of the cornea influences the IOL power.”

Roslyn resident Dr. Eric D. Donnenfeld, a Board Certified Ophthalmologist and founding partner of Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island (OCLI), recently traveled to Yerevan, Armenia to perform a new, safe, and effective glaucoma surgery on patients that otherwise may have gone blind. Accompanying him on the trip was Dr. Kerry Solomon. There is little accessible glaucoma medication available and glaucoma surgery is highly risky in Armenia. Drs. Donnenfeld and Solomon implanted approximately 150 Glaukos glaucoma microstent devices in 92 patients.
“All of the patients are doing well,” said Dr. Donnenfeld. “We met many extraordinary and capable Armenian ophthalmologists to share our experience and surgical technique. We hope this new procedure will soon be available in the United States.”
Dr. Donnenfeld practices in OCLI’s Rockville Centre and Lynbrook offices. He has been a leader in ophthalmology for more than two decades. Dr. Donnenfeld was one of the original investigators of the excimer laser and has performed tens of thousands of laser vision corrective surgical procedures. He has written many articles and has traveled all over the world lecturing on refractive, cataract and corneal eye surgery. He received his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School, and graduated in the top five percent of his class. Dr. Donnenfeld is on the Board of Overseers at Dartmouth Medical School. In addition to this honor, he is the surgical director of the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island and the Editor in Chief of Cataract and Refractive Surgery today, a well respected ophthalmology magazine.
OCLI, one of the largest ophthalmology practices in the nation, consists of 23 eye doctors representing most subspecialties of ophthalmology in 7 locations throughout Long Island; in Rockville Centre, Lynbrook, Valley Stream, Stony Brook, Manhasset, East Meadow and Port Jefferson. OCLI also has a research department that is involved in studies to improve the treatment and diagnosing of ophthalmic diseases. BACKGROUND:
Glaucoma, often termed the “sneak thief of sight”, affects approximately 2.2 million Americans and 70 million people worldwide. It is one of the leading causes of blindness and vision loss in the world. In its early stages, glaucoma may present few or no symptoms and can gradually steal sight without warning. In fact, it is estimated that half of the people affected by glaucoma do not know they have it. While glaucoma can lead to blindness, early detection and treatment can help preserve sight.

Becker’s ASC Review recently published their list of the 34 Best Ophthalmologists in America which included OCLI’s Dr. Eric Donnenfeld.
Dr. Donnenfeld was one of the original investigators of the excimer laser. He has performed more refractive surgeries and has trained more surgeons to perform refractive surgery than any other doctor in the New York City area. More LASIK surgeons have chosen Dr. Donnenfeld to perform refractive surgery on their own eyes than have chosen all other surgeons combined. He designed and patented four instruments for refractive surgery use.
Dr. Donnenfeld earned his MD from Dartmouth Medical School. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Manhattan Eye Ear & Throat Hospital and his fellowship in anterior segment & refractive surgery and cornea & external disease at Wills Eye Hospital. He was chosen as the 2005 National Cataract and Refractive Surgeon of the Year by the journal Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today.
